Recently my friend Justin gave me his notes on the classic
Good to Great by
Jim Collins. I was grateful because I've read only small parts of the book in the past and this was like the
Cliff's Notes version. In his book Collins shares what exactly set aparts good companies and organizations from the great ones. One principle he talks about is understanding
The Hedgehog Concept. "Hedgehogs...simplify a complex world into a single organizing idea, a basic principle, or a concept that unifies and guides everything." To understand the hedgehog concept, a company must ask itself three questions:
- What are we deeply passionate about?
- What can we be the best in the world at?
- What drives the economic engine of the company?
Wherever the answers to these questions intersect, this is the unifying "hedgehog concept" the company should focus on, if it is to attain greatness. So, Justin and I sat down for a while to try and answer these questions about my school and more broadly about Christian education in any setting.
In the next several posts I want to share what Justin and I came up with.
